Hi James, good luck and let us know how you go. Both bikes are OK for a new full licensed rider in my opinion, but are very different. The Suzuki is the less aggressive of the two.

Hey guys,

Thanks for responding above regarding my choice between the GSX-S750 and 17' MT09.

I'm coming from a 1996 Kawasaki ZXR 250 (the old 4 cylinder motors). I intially test rode litre bikes and determined I am not ready for them at this time hence my choice of the smaller motorcycles. Test rode the GSX-S750 which was very easy to ride and confidence inspiring and will be testing the Yamaha this week.

I have heard conflicting opinions on whether the Yamaha is too much of a handful for someone coming off their P's (especially with that front end) but have decided to book a test ride this week to see for myself if that is actually the case.

Hey James, the MT-09 (or GSX-S750 for that matter) would be an ideal option when upgrading. Being nakedbikes they aren't as aggressive (power delivery and ergonomics-wise) as a full blown sportsbike and are tuned for mid-range. That's not to say you can't get onto mischief on either of them, as you certainly can! The electronics package also gives you a bit of back-up if things go wrong.

What are you upgrading from? The MT-09 is the more aggressive of the two you mentioned and I'd certainly recommend the 2017 model with the host of upgrades.

Hi guys. Great review!
Would you guys recommend this bike for someone coming off their provisionals? I am looking between this or the Suzuki GSX-S750.

Hey Henry, you'd need to check whether your local dealers have that model available, it can vary depending on local laws and motorcycle limitations, like capacity in some markets. You should be able to check at: www.yamaha-motor.com.ph, and also find local dealers.
