The legendary Ducati racer Paul Smart has died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 78. Smart was well known for winning the Imola 200 miles in 1972 on-board the famous green framed Ducati. Police are still investigating the accident which occurred with another motorist in England.

Smart reportedly collided with a car while riding his motorcycle between East Sussex and Kent in the UK, the 78 year old was pronounced dead on Wednesday the 27th of October.

The offical BSB twitter account tweeted: “We are saddened by the news that Paul Smart lost his life in a road traffic collision today while riding his motorcycle Paul was a hugely popular character in and out of the paddock. He was much loved by his family, friends and fans around the world and our thoughts are with them.”

Paul Smart had a successful career in the 250, 350 and 500cc classes gaining seven podiums across the early 70s. Centre-stage of his trophy cabernet is the win he had on-board a Ducati at the 200 miles of Imola in 1972, with Ducait later naming a special edition model after him in 2005 known as the Ducati Paul Smart 1000.
