If you're looking for a pair of boots that tick all boxes, then you can’t look past these Fly Racing FR5 motocross boots. Dan Thomerson has been wearing them all year, here are his thoughts...
Over my many years of riding motocross, I have used many different brands and styles of motocross boots. Recently the guys at Mcleod Accessories sent out a pair of Fly Racing FR5 motocross boots in black and white for me to put to the test. Here is my review…
This is the first opportunity I have had to try out some Fly Racing motocross boots. As soon as I took the Fly Racing FR5 boots out of the box I was surprised by the eye-catching stylish black and white design of the boot paired with silver aluminum quick-lock buckles. Nice…
These boots offer an impressive level of comfort with their soft interior foam that surrounds the ankle and collar, with full textile lining inside the boot. The padded microfiber gaiter provides a comfortable rim around the calf while sealing the opening from debris, preventing those annoying pieces of dirt from getting inside your boots while riding.
The FR5 boots offer plenty of foot room in the toe area of the boot for anyone with wider feet, keeping you comfortable for the entire day’s ride. With adjustable aluminium quick-lock buckles these boots are quick and easy to set up allowing you to get that perfect fitment before you jump on the bike.
I’ve worn them on the Triumph TF 250 and 450 MX and Enduro launches, plus the Triumph 450-RC and YZ450F Motocross launches as well, and lots of personal riding at my day job at CityMX in Melbourne, and they have been fantastic.
“This feature definitely saved my shin while out on my most recent enduro test ride”…
The FR5 motocross boots feature a pre-shaped molded plastic 3D shin protector for impact resistance and comfort which stands up to anything thrown at it while out on the track or enduro riding. This feature definitely saved my shin while out on my most recent enduro test ride.
They also have a 3D molded plastic shift panel with added grooves and texture to prevent premature wear. The addition of the plastic mold did take me a little getting used to, as I found it a little difficult to get under the gear selector to shift up a gear while on the track.
Once I had bedded the boots in after a few rides, I adapted to the plastic mold. I never had that issue again and was able to smash through the gears effortlessly out on the track, and now find it a benefit.
The bio-mechanical pivots on the inside and outside of the ankle provide increased stability and support, while still offering a very good range of motion making gear selection and rear braking feel unrestricted and effortless compared to other stiffer boots on the market, a plus for anyone.
The FR5 boots have stylish molded rubber compound outsoles which are designed to offer good levels of grip while remaining durable. These are paired with the rubber heat shields on the top inside of the boots, which not only offer protection from burns but also provide an amazing amount of grip to the bike in both wet and dry conditions.
Overall, the Fly Racing FR5 motocross boots are a very comfortable and protective boot that once I had bed in offered a good level of grip that allowed me to stay attached to the bike both on the motocross track and on an enduro trail.
The Fly Racing FR5 Motocross Boots are available for $399RRP in Black, Red/Black/White and Grey/Blue/White in sizes US7-US13. Visit amxsuperstores.com.au for more.
