Christof Lischka, Head of Development at BMW Motorrad, said the new model represents a step-change in the iconic roadster’s evolution. “With the new BMW R 1300 R, we’ve taken our dynamic roadster with boxer engine to a whole new level,” he explained. “It delivers a far sportier experience while retaining core BMW values such as touring capability and comfort.”
Sharper Design, Focused Ergonomics
Visually, the R 1300 R adopts a more aggressive stance with flatter handlebars and slightly rear-set footrests. This ergonomic triangle places riders further forward over the front wheel, improving front-end feel and enhancing control in spirited riding. Despite the sportier position, the R 1300 R retains its versatility for commuting, relaxed cruising, or longer touring with a pillion.
Four variants will be available at launch:
Base model in Snapper Rocks Blue
Exclusive in Racing Blue Metallic
Performance in Light White
Option 719 in Black Storm Metallic, featuring premium finishes
Most Powerful Boxer Yet
At the heart of the new R 1300 R lies BMW’s latest 1,300cc two-cylinder boxer engine producing 107kW (145hp) at 7,750rpm and 149Nm at 6,500rpm, making it the most powerful production boxer motor to date. This increase in output stems from an enlarged bore and new crankshaft design, while the redline climbs to 9,000rpm.
The engine retains BMW’s ShiftCam technology for variable valve timing and lift, ensuring broad torque delivery and smooth performance across the rev range. It is mated to a six-speed gearbox with shaft final drive.
Technology & Safety Upgrades
Three riding modes are included as standard – Rain, Road, and Eco – allowing the bike to adapt to conditions and rider preference. An optional Riding Modes Pro upgrade adds Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes for aggressive road or track use.
Engine drag torque control (MSR) is also standard, preventing rear-wheel slip under aggressive downshifting by momentarily opening the throttle valves to stabilise the motorcycle.
BMW’s Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) is available as an option, enabling fully automated clutch operation for seamless manual or automatic gear shifts, reducing rider fatigue without sacrificing engagement.
New Chassis & Suspension
A completely redesigned chassis underpins the R 1300 R, featuring a sheet metal steel main frame and die-cast aluminium rear frame. Combined with the more compact engine, this results in better mass centralisation and improved handling precision.
Up front, a new upside-down telescopic fork with 47mm inner tubes provides stiffer, more controlled damping, while the rear features BMW’s revised EVO Paralever system for greater stability and traction. Notably, the R 1300 R becomes the world’s first production motorcycle with a telescopic fork featuring adjustable spring rate when optioned with the Electronic Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) system.
DSA dynamically adjusts damping, spring rate, and load compensation according to riding mode, conditions, and manoeuvres, enhancing stability and comfort across all surfaces.
New 17-inch hollow-spoke aluminium wheels shave 1.4kg off unsprung mass, further improving agility and braking performance.
Braking & Lighting
The R 1300 R is fitted with a twin-disc front brake setup using radially mounted four-piston callipers, combined with a single rear disc and BMW’s Integral ABS Pro system. A sport brake package with titanium-coloured callipers is available for riders seeking sharper stopping power.
Lighting is upgraded with a full LED headlight in a distinctive octagonal design, while the optional Headlight Pro adds adaptive cornering illumination that adjusts beam spread based on lean angle, significantly improving night-time safety.
Comfort & Touring Features
Despite its sport-focused updates, BMW has not neglected the R 1300 R’s practical touring potential. A range of seat options ensures seat heights as low as 790mm remain available, maintaining the roadster’s accessibility for shorter riders and boosting confidence at standstill.
A newly developed luggage system is available, featuring electrified 26L and 29L cases with interior lighting and USB-C charging ports. They integrate seamlessly with the central locking system and are complemented by a strapless tank bag that attaches via a tank ring for convenience.
