2020 KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS has landed in Australia
KYMCO’s second-generation Downtown 350i is coming to Australia featuring a refined Euro 4-compliant engine, KYMCO’s new Noodoe Navigation system and the added security of a traction control system creating a sharper and sophisticated sports-touring scooter experience for the LAMS market.
Since 2009, when the first generation KYMCO Downtown (350i ABS review here) 350i launched, the original Downtown 350i proved popular by selling more than 100,000 units across more than 40 countries. KYMCO Australia has now announced the second generation, the Downtown 350i TCS. The price remains unchanged at $7490 + ORC and has landed in KYMCO showrooms, the LAMS-approved Downtown 350i TCS features more safety and technology while KYMCO claim that they have blended comfort and sporty handling under a dynamic guise.
New for the 2020 is the standard fitment of traction control which, in addition to the existing ABS brakes, adds a high degree of safety and confidence to the riding experience. KYMCO say that Instead of exceeding the limit of tyre grip, the traction control system works in synergy with ABS to help restore the Downtown 350i TCS to safety. Further to this is revised bodywork, which provides increased cornering ability giving the KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS a lean angle of up to 39 degrees.
Also new for the KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS is the rider-centric NOODOE Navigation, which provides real-time directions and street-countdown indications allowing the rider to focus on the road. The system, operated via an Apple/Android-compatible app, integrates with the rider’s smartphone and the Downtown 350i’s large, colour TFT screen and allows for easy pre-ride destination entry as well as personalised journey navigation whereby up to five destinations can be entered and transferred to the Downtown 350i simultaneously.
At the heart of the KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS is an overhauled 321cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine producing 28.8hp@7250rpm and 30Nm@5750rpm, retuned for more performance at a lower rev range and flexibility while complying with Euro 4 emissions regulations. The KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS also received a host of mechanical refinements to the engine, cooling systems and CVT transmission. A new balance block reduces vibration during engine idling and low-speed riding through the use of an axe-shaped design. A redesigned lower cowling provides a 40 per cent larger surface area for improved engine cooling efficiency. Additionally, a new oil lubrication system features a rectangular tank design and greater use of aluminium for increased engine cooling. The Downtown 350i’s CVT has also been redesigned with high-strength materials to improve conversion efficiency.
The KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS features a steel-tube chassis and suspension that includes a 37mm fork with 110mm travel and a single-arm, twin-shock rear with 108mm travel and five-position preload adjustability for optimum handling while riding with a passenger. The stopping power comprises twin 260mm floating rotors with three-piston calipers up front while a twin-piston caliper bites a 240mm rotor at the rear. The Downtown 350i TCS’s ABS system is the latest Bosch Generation 9.1M dual-channel system, which complements the traction control system.
The exterior design of the KYMCO Downtown 350i TCS was again conceived by automotive designer, furniture maker and architect Massimo Zaniboni of Arkema Studio in Milan. KYMCO say that through the design language of the Downtown 350i TCS, Zaniboni placed strong emphasis on taut and aggressive bodywork and distinctive LED daytime-running lights as a means of accentuating modern agility and dynamism. Meanwhile, fluidity of the rear ensures the Downtown is a modern transport solution designed for wide-range use by exceeding the needs of the rider, passenger and the load.
Other convenient and upmarket touches include adjustable levers to accommodate a wide range of hand spans; a multifunction ignition lock that acts as a theft deterrent as well as a wide, two-deck saddle, which receives new materials and finishes, including leather, for maximum rider comfort over longer distances.
