The GYTR Yamaha Junior Team continue to race on in state-based events and again added to the trophy cabinet over the past two weekends with success in Queensland and South Australia. The last two weeks have been a busy period for the Queensland based riders.

August was another successful month for the GYTR YJR in Queensland and South Australia.

The Rockhampton club hosted the second running of the hugely successful King of Capricorn event that saw over 400 race starved riders roll into town for two big days of racing action. From a high-quality class of pro riders contesting for the King Of Capricorn crown and a slice of the $38,000 in prizemoney, to the full gates of junior riders desperate to race on a popular track.

All the usual junior classes were contested as well as the Prince of Capricorn which pitted the best juniors together in a seven race format that featured some longer motos as well as some back to back sprints to determine the champion.

The winner was GYTR- Yamaha Junior Racing rider, Kobe Drew, on his YZ250F. Drew proved fast and consistent across all seven races finishing with 1-2-1-1-1-1-2 results and a worthy winner. He amassed 169 points to finish clear of Jack Mather and Jett Burgess Stevens. Drew combined good starts with impressive track speed and fitness to take the win and continue his excellent form in the 2021 season.

Drew mounted the podium in the 125cc class as well, finishing in second place and just two points behind the winner on the day and teammate, Jake Cannon. Drew finished with 4-2-3-2 results in the four motos and was drained at the end of a busy weekend that saw him race 11 events.

It was a weekend to remember for Jake Cannon who made several trips to the podium over the weekend. Cannon, who has stepped up his speed in 2021, took victory in the 125cc class with 2-3-2-3 results, proving he is also consistent as well as fast.

He backed that up with another victory in the 85cc class, winning all four motos contested. Cannon was on fire on board his YZ85 as he charged around the demanding Rockhampton circuit. And to round out a successful weekend, he came home fourth in the Price of Capricorn race, making him the first rider home on a two stroke 125cc against the 250cc four strokes.    

Jesse Dobson represented Yamaha in the senior 250cc class taking home a fourth place finish.

In the senior divisions Yamaha were well represented in the King of Capricorn event with Jesse Dobson (Serco Yamaha), Levi Rogers (Yamalube Yamaha) and Jayce Cosford (Top Gun Yamaha) all 250cc mounted and keen to grab some of the huge prizemoney on offer.

Dobson ended up being the best placed Yamaha rider coming home in fourth place, and the first 250cc machine home, with a string of good motos. Dobson finished on 149 points with consistent top five results in most motos. Just two points behind him, and sixth on the day, was Levi Rogers on 147 points. Rogers was fast all weekend and just a fall in one of the later motos cost him a better result. Jayce Cosford slotted into seventh place with 112 points.

It was then to Mackay where Kobe Drew impressed by winning every single moto he contested.

The opening round of the QLD Motocross Champs got off to a false start just a few weeks back when the original opening round at Coolum was postponed as bikes were on the track as Queensland went into a lock down. Mackay was due to be the second round, but with the Coolum round now rescheduled for late in September, the Sugar City turned on a technical and challenging track to get the championship under way. With Drew and Cannon riding high on confidence after a success weekend at Rockhampton, the impressive results continued at Mackay.

Drew was in devastating form on the weekend. Contesting the 13-14 years 125cc and 13-14 years 250cc, Drew won every moto he contested. He won from the front after hole-shotting races, and he charged through the pack, it didn’t matter as Drew got his championship aspirations off to the perfect start on the weekend. Cannon kept his train on the track, taking the class win in the 14-15 years 85cc class with 3-1-1- results and then came home in the runner up position in the 13-14 years 125cc class, behind his team-mate.

Jayce Cosford finished fourth in the MX2 class, with Yamaha rider Jesse Dobson taking home the silver.

In the senior classes, Yamaha finished the MX2 class in 2-4-5 with Jesse Dobson claiming second with 2-1-2 results in a good day at the track. He battled hard with Todd Waters and the pair made for some great racing. In fourth place came Jayce Cosford, with Levi Rogers just behind him in fifth. The second and final round of the Queensland Motocross Championships will take place at the Coolum circuit on September 25-26.

The fifth and final round of the South Australian Motocross Championships was conducted at Gilman last weekend with the state’s finest riders banging bars one more time this year to determine who is crowned the SAMX champ.  

Levi Rodgers also finished in a great fifth position in Mackay, Queensland. Overall a successful weekend for Yamaha.

With Ryder Woodrow still side-lined with injury, it was left to Wil Carpenter to fly the YJR flag at the final round and he did it well. He ended the final round on top of the 12-15 years 85cc class with a commanding performance. Carpenter took to round win with 1-1-2 results and despite missing a round due to injury, finished up third in the South Australian state championship. 

Jobe Dunne also wrapped up the SA MX championship in the 9-11 years 85cc despite missing the final round due to Covid border restrictions. The Victorian based Dunne dominated the opening rounds and had built up a big enough lead that even though he wasn’t able to compete at the final round, he was still able to snare the win and another championship for GYTR- YJR.
