Yamaha YZ65 Cup Hits QMP
30 excited YZ65 riders arrived at Queensland Moto Park for the latest instalment of the YZ65 Cup series on 13/14 August. With 20mm of rain overnight, the one model event that offers junior riders a unique experience started out as a challenge. Morning practice was tough but became easier as the sun emerged!
Riders like Aiden Blowers – whose family travelled 5000km from Darwin, NT and back to take part – enjoyed rubbing shoulders with ProMX riders on the action-packed weekend. “It took us two and a half days to get here so we’re making a bit of a holiday out of it,” explains dad Sean. “It’s been an awesome experience being in among the bLU cru and for Aidy it’s definitely something he’ll remember,” adds mum Laura. “It feels like one big Yamaha family with a lot of great smiles and a lot of fun times seeing the kids race and develop through the day,” adds Billy Hoyes’ mum Bianca.
In addition to the races the bLU cRU riders were treated to a muddy track walk on Saturday, a Yamaha team meet and greet/autograph session and welcome BBQ. Each rider received a bLU cRU rider pack containing a shirt, hat, hoodie, cooler bag and more. Monster Energy CDR Team Principal Craig Dack hosted the riders on a truck tour too.
The event was run and won by Heath Davy – also unstoppable in the first event at Maitland – followed by Deegan Fort and Jagger Townley, son of former world champion MX rider Ben Townley who flew from New Zealand to participate. But the smiles on both the faces of both kids and parents told the wider story of a fun weekend that will live long in the memory.
“It’s all about providing the ultimate bLU cRU factory experience and creating a community of riders,” explains Nick Marshall. “The kids arrive from all states and really connect at the track which means they are able to make friendships across Australia,” he explains.
“Kids don’t usually get a chance to participate in something like the YZ65 Cup,” says former MX world champ Ben Townley. “It’s really cool for them to hang out with each other, have a blast and meet with the MX1 and MX2 riders.”
