Yamaha’s Turner Turns It Up at Kayo Stadium

Racing for the Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha Team, the California-based 20-year-old made an instant impression on his Australian debut, combining raw speed with an aggressive yet controlled riding style that thrilled the 14,000 fans in attendance across both nights. Turner arrived in Australia two weeks before the opening round, spending time adapting to his YZ250F and gelling with the Yamaha crew. When the gates dropped on Saturday night, the American wasted no time making his mark.
He charged to victory in the opening 10-lap final, carving through the pack before taking the lead and holding firm to the finish. The second race didn’t start as smoothly — an early-lap tangle dropped Turner to the rear of the field — but an inspired charge through the pack saw him claw his way to fourth, sealing the overall win for the night with 1-4 results. Confidence was high heading into Sunday, and Turner delivered again. After setting the fastest lap in qualifying, he stormed to another race-one win and backed it up with a measured second-place ride in the final moto, locking down a perfect double victory weekend.
“What an awesome weekend — it went even better than I’d hoped for,” Turner said. “The team has been amazing since I arrived, and the YZ250F felt incredible. Both nights were intense; with the shorter races, every lap matters, and it gets wild out there. The Aussie fans have been so welcoming, and I’m already looking forward to Sydney in a few weeks.” Behind Turner, Ryder Kingsford battled through mixed fortunes. Nursing an ankle injury, Kingsford still managed two fifth-place results on Saturday for fifth overall, before returning on Sunday with renewed pace and confidence.
In race one, Kingsford shadowed Turner to the chequered flag in second place, only three seconds adrift. Race two looked set to deliver a Yamaha 1-2 until a mistake in the whoops saw Kingsford lose ground, eventually finishing 11th. His 2-11 results placed him sixth overall for the round, and he now sits third in the SX2 standings. “I’m frustrated because I felt like I had the speed to win,” Kingsford admitted. “Saturday wasn’t great, but I turned it around on Sunday — then made too many mistakes at the wrong time. I’ll reset and come out swinging for Sydney.”
Teammate Jayce Cosford also impressed on his return from injury. After damaging his shoulder in August’s ProMX finale, Cosford entered Redcliffe with minimal bike time but rode sensibly to finish inside the top 10 both nights. He posted 9-7 finishes for eighth overall on Saturday and improved to 9-5 for seventh on Sunday, leaving him seventh in the championship — just a handful of points from the top five. “I only started riding a couple of weeks ago, so it was great to finish both nights strong,” Cosford said. “I’m feeling good again, and we’ll keep building heading into Sydney.”
The Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha team now looks to round three at Shark Park, Sydney, on October 25, where Turner will aim to extend his championship lead and Kingsford and Cosford will chase redemption.
