Three wheel vehicles are now recognised as a vehicle in their own right by Transport for NSW, with unique Leaner and Provisional training requirements. The category is an option for those out that don’t have a motorcycle licence or car licence for that matter…

So if you have decided that three wheels is the way to go and you are in NSW, this is the course for you. This course doesn’t mean that all trike owners have to be certified on three wheels, it is just for those that don’t want to have a motorcycle licence and have decided that a trike is the go for them.


All the invitees including BikeReview attended the Australian Brewery, next door to the Stay Upright training area, for an initial presentation with the executives of Can-Am Australia and also the three leading staff from Stay Upright. The presentation was about a brand new training initiative between Stay Upright, Can-Am and Transport for NSW.

There had been some very serious consultation between Transport for NSW and Stay Upright initially with a number of test days carried out to see what was required within the training to properly cover a three wheel vehicle and secondly to see which three wheel vehicles or trikes in the market would actually qualify as a Learner and Provisional vehicle. The end result is the Can-Am models are the only ones eligible. The biggest factor being the available engine capacities of trikes and three wheelers.



Can-Am has the Ryker in both 600cc and 900cc versions. The 600cc model was the only vehicle that qualified as a Learner vehicle based on capacity and power. So for the present, Can-Am has a perfect fit with Transport for NSW with the Ryker as a  3WV Learner vehicle for future 3WV riders and owners.

After the presentation we walked around to the Stay Upright training facility. There is already an area dedicated for the 3WV Learners and Provisional courses. Over the rest of the day we had a chance to experience the Leaners course on a Can-Am Ryker, even though it was condensed for our needs, it showed very clearly that a 3WV is very different to a motorcycle and there are many facets of training that are specific to the 3WV.

The coaching was from the very basics to cater for people that have never ridden a motorcycle before or for that matter driven a car before. The thoroughness of the course puts a new Learner for 3WV in a very competent position to then obtain a Learners Permit and ride the streets of NSW with confidence. The same can be said for when that person does the Provisional course and then obtains their Provisional licence for 3WV’s. I think this course is well overdue for people new to 3WV riding.

I have owned four trikes over my 56 years of riding, three purpose built machines and one factory trike. It takes time to learn a trike and its particular needs and wants when riding. It really is nothing like riding a motorcycle apart from that you are in the elements and experiencing the ride and the journey far more than in a car, which I consider is like watching TV while you drive…

Two wheels at front or two wheels at the back, 3WV’s behave similar on the road with some differences in weight bias and steering effects. The big issue up until now is that there has been no real formal training or licensing regarding a 3WV. I welcome this initiative from Transport for NSW, Stay Upright and Can-Am. My background is in Police motorcycle training, motorcycle track days and training.


Eventually I would like to see a variant on the 3WV training that could include riders of large capacity trikes to undertake a course of this nature to really bring that person up to speed on what is required to ride a 3WV. We see far too often those riders swapping over to three wheels from two have serious issues with understanding and riding a trike or 3WV. Support and training is the only really way to give a new rider to 3WV’s or trikes a safe start in their long journey on a three wheeler.

Can-Am is in the enviable position of having dedicated decades to their three wheel vehicles and it is a very fine machine with state of the art technology, styling and performance. The models available offer something for everyone from the Ryker 600cc model right up to the top of the line Spyder RT. I had never ridden one before, so for me it was a new experience with the Can-Am, all my trike riding had been two rear wheels.



There is little doubt about the quality of the Can-Am range, things that I liked were the simple automatic Ryker with no gears to worry about, just an accelerator like on a motorcycle and a foot brake, so simple to ride! The larger Can-Am Speeder’s offer thumb control for the gears selection and still only a foot brake to look after all three wheels. Both are very good concepts and both very good and well behaved three wheelers on the road. No matter what three wheel brand you own there is always a certain feel to a three wheeler, none have eliminated that typical three wheel pitching when on rough roads, but how that is controlled is the real test, Can-Am has done their homework and with independent front suspension for the two front wheels, they have refined the ride to a very high level. Well done Can-Am.

I’ve attached the Stay Upright 3WV learner and provisional licence requirement direct from their website (book here). This fully explains what is required to ride a 3WV if you have no motorcycle licence and do not want one. I hope this helps those people out there, whether brand new to the ride or a long term pillion that now wants to ride or any other person that has the passion for adventure to take the next step and move to a 3WV, it’s worth the effort… We will have some reviews on Can-Am models coming up in the future, stand by…
