2019 Yamaha XSR900 arrives for $12,999 +ORC
Inspired by Yamaha’s iconic 1970s models, the XSR900 has become a star in Yamaha’s sport-heritage range since its release in 2017, and based on the award-winning MT-09 Maximum Torque model, the XSR900 is heritage by nature but modern by design.
Styling cues linking the XSR900 to its forebears include aluminium tank covers, front and rear aluminium fenders, hand-polished aluminium details, stitched seat, circular instrument clock, circular tail light and retro-style headlight with aluminium stay.
Lurking beneath the heritage façade is 21st century technology. Power is provided by the high torque 847cc CP3 triple-cylinder engine, featuring three levels of adjustable traction control (TCS), D-Mode selectable engine maps, and an assist and slipper (AS) clutch.
The XSR900 certainly has the go to match the show. Its powerful liquid-cooled 847cc in-line three-cylinder CP3 engine produces 84.6kW and 87.5Nm, and benefits from the latest Yamaha technology.
The fully-adjustable Traction Control System (TCS) has three performance modes which riders can adjust to suit the road conditions. There is a choice of minimum or maximum system intervention, or the traction control can be disengaged completely at the flick of a switch.
Yamaha D-MODE allows a selection of riding characteristics to suit the conditions and the rider’s mood. Riders have the choice of a sharper response characteristic or a milder, more gentle setting.
Suspension is a 41mm USD (upside down) fork adjustable for rebound damping, while at the rear the Monocross linked-type suspension offers preload and rebound damping adjustment, and the riding position of the XSR900 is more upright and refined than its sporty MT-09 brethren, but agile handling and instant torque remains. Yamaha’s XSR900 aims to strike a perfect balance between retro and contemporary.
The clever, lightweight aluminium Diamond frame features an externally mounted swingarm to provide a short (1440mm) wheelbase. The narrower foot peg position provides a more comfortable ride.
