When Yamaha launched the iconic MT-09 in 2013, it initiated a brand new era in the motorcycle world. The Dark Side of Japan philosophy was widely recognised, symbolising the strong link with Yamaha’s Japanese origins. With the introduction of the MT range, Yamaha showed its intention to create a new type of motorcycle aimed at riders looking to express themselves.

The MT family quickly grew, with the MT-03, MT-07 and MT-10 joining the MT-09 to provide riders with an entire step up experience. High spec SP versions followed for the MT-09 and MT-10, further broadening the appeal of Yamaha’s unique Hyper Naked range. Constant evolution of the Dark Side of Japan theme sees the latest MT-03 feature a radical and aggressive new look with advancements in technology for a higher overall specification. MT-03 is now darker than ever.

2020 MT-03 Features

Aggressive next-generation MT styling
Aggressive new next-generation design has been dubbed Dark Lightning, and strengthens MT-03’s iconic looks. Dynamic new mass-forward body styling features a unique tightly-packed appearance around the engine area, and a new wide-shouldered fuel tank cover and lightweight air scoops reinforce the strong MT family links.

Ergonomic riding position
The revised bodywork has enabled Yamaha’s designers to achieve the optimum riding position providing MT-03 riders with the highest levels of comfort and control. The slim centre section allows the rider to mould their body closer to the bike, the low seat height, higher-mounted handlebars and compact frame guarantee a natural and ergonomic riding position.

New 37mm upside down front forks
One of the most significant technical upgrades for 2020 is the fitment of new high-specification upside down forks that deliver enhanced handling performance during braking, acceleration and cornering. Featuring gold-coloured outer tubes and 37mm inner tubes, these new forks – together with an aggressive new front cowl and dual position lights – give this premium lightweight all of the presence and stature of a much larger capacity MT.

Long swingarm with new shock settings
Yamaha first introduced the concept of an extended swingarm on its YZF-R1 Supersport machine. The same technology is now used on the new MT-03. Pivoting closer to the machine’s midway point, the 573mm long asymmetrical swingarm reduces variance in the bike’s angle with the road surface delivering a high level of controllability during braking, cornering and acceleration. The rear shock’s revised pre-load and damping settings, along with a stiffer rear spring, further refine the bike’s overall handling performance.

New high-tech LCD instruments
The new-look state-of-the-art dashboard features a negative LCD display with an attractive multi-function design and layout.

Dual slant-eye position lights and LED headlight
The aggressive new face features dual slant-eye position lights to convey a predatory look. A small but powerful LED headlight is positioned inconspicuously beneath the front cowl and position light assembly. This minimalist design gives the new model a unique and charismatic look that reinforces the bike’s bold and futuristic style. Slim new LED flashers integrate well in the MT-03’s aggressive styling.

Sophisticated 321cc two-cylinder engine
At its heart is one of the most sophisticated powerplants in the class. Featuring a balanced two-cylinder configuration, it delivers a super smooth feeling at lower rpm. High-tech internals include carburised conrods and lightweight heat-resistant forged pistons. Their low reciprocating weight reduce vibration and enhance throttle response. The all aluminium DiASil cylinders offer excellent heat dissipation properties for reduced horsepower losses.
