A last minute decision to join the 2022 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Wollongong seemed to have paid off. With the sun shining on a heavy rain forecasted day, this made for an awesome day filled with classic bikes and fundraising for a good cause…

The ride kicked off at the Australian Motorlife Museum in Kembla Grange, just south of Wollongong.

With the forecast looking terrible the night before, it was looking like a damp day out on the bike, but as I opened the blinds on Sunday morning, I rushed to put on my suit and jump on the bike. The ride kicked off at the Australian Motorlife Museum in Kembla Grange, just south of Wollongong. An awesome location for motoring enthusiasts with the Museum open for riders to have a look through their amazing collection of vintage cars and bikes.

This year was a special one for DGR, the past two years saw cancellations and riders forced to ride alone in countries that didn’t allow mass gatherings. Riders were itching to get out on their bikes in 2022, including the DGR creator and director, Mark Hawwa.

DGR creator and director, Mark Hawwa, joined us for the ride in Wollongong on-board his Triumph Thruxton.

Mark joined us for the ride in Wollongong on-board his Triumph Thruxton, riding alongside Jane Sim and employees from City Coast Motorcycles, who helped organise the Wollongong ride. Jane and City Coast Motorcycles have always been a big part of DGR Wollongong, putting on an awesome event each year.

After an hour and a half of walking around the carpark, admiring all the beautiful classic style bikes in the carpark and museum, it was time to throw a leg over the bike and head out for a ride along the scenic route laid out for us.

From the 223 riders registered for the Wollongong event, DGR raised a total of $159,588aud!

Riding up through Dapto, up Marshall Mount, leading to Albion Park, then up through the scenic roads of Jamberoo, passing through Shellharbour and ending up at Club Windang for lunch. It was nice to riding at half pace and soak up the surroundings while waving to everyone on the side of the road who had come out to see us pass through!

I was out on the 2022 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob we have in for review currently, while it didn’t fit the theme entirely, DGR were happy for me to tag along with no bikes being turned away. A choice of a white suit jacket may not have been the best decision as the wet road was keen to flick mud up for an expensive trip to the dry cleaners, probably recording record sales the day after the ride each year!

Highway riding was kept to an absolute minimum as we got to soak up the scenery around the Illawarra.

From the 223 riders registered for the Wollongong event, DGR raised a total of $159,588! This number can still go up too, with the opportunity to sponsor riders up until the 5th of June. My rider page is still open too, head here if you’d like to sponsor a part of the BikeReview team.

There’s even better news for NSW riders who missed out on their local ride. If you still want to get involved, the Sydney ride was postponed to June 5th! You can sign up now and join in the ride for what is looking to be the biggest DGR in Australia.
