The second instalment in the new generation of litre-class KTM Adventure models has arrived. Redesigned from the ground up, the all-new KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is what KTM call the ultimate all-terrain powerhouse, the bike also has a new chassis and ergonomics.

Riding the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R across rough terrain in the easiest and most intuitive way possible has been a development priority for KTM with the 2021 edition. All new bodywork providing claimed excellent ergonomics and allowing fuel to be held in the tank as low as possible has been designed for better agility, a lower center of gravity and an even better feeling in all riding conditions.

Riding the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R across rough terrain in the easiest and most intuitive way possible has been a development priority for KTM.

A claimed sharper cornering sensation has been achieved by moving the steering head back by 15 mm and re-designing the front section of the engine. The sensation of control and balance is augmented by the all new three-part fuel tank that holds 23 litres and is positioned lower to assist riding equilibrium.

Like the chassis, the subframe has also been reconstructed and is topped with a sporty stepped seat at 880 mm high with a slim profile and handy storage underneath.

The entire subframe has also hit the drawing board too, with changes for the 2021 model.

The fully-adjustable 48 mm front forks – with an impressive 220 mm of travel – feature split damping functions and quick modification potential with a twist of the respective dials on top of each individual fork. The same travel measurement graces the WP PDS shock.

The KTM 1290 Super Adventure R relies on the new – Euro 5-ready – LC8 engine that is now 1.6kg lighter and puts out 160hp@9,000rpm and 138Nm@6,500rpm for the best power-to-weight offering in the segment.

A new motor has been added to comply with Euro4 emission regulations.

Overall the updated package makes the LC8 flighty, more reliable and more dependable for all types of trail. 15,000 km service intervals have again been achieved with low fuel consumption at 5.7L/100km. An added feature thanks to a reworked airbox, riders can now easily access the air filter by simply removing four screws.

The 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is a vessel for the latest electronics packages and continuation of the collaboration with first-rate pioneers like Bosch. Alongside the standard RAIN, STREET, SPORT and OFFROAD ride modes, the optional RALLY mode permits riders to set throttle response to aggressive and select one of nine different levels of wheel spin. The changes to suit any kind of terrain are all charted through the all-new and more use-friendly 7’’ TFT dash, which is hooked to a new Connectivity Unit.

The 2021 KTM 1290 Adventure R will hit Australian showrooms in May, with a price tag TBA.
