Tom Edwards World Supersport 300 bound in 2018
In an exciting announcement, Tom Edwards will be racing in the World Supersport 300 (WorldSSP300) Championship with Team Benjan – Kawasaki. After the chance of a lifetime to race in Jerez, Spain recently, Edwards impressed the team to earn a full-time ride for 2018. It has been Edward’s lifelong dream to race in a World Championship and now he is getting his chance at the age of 16.
Edwards won this year’s YMF R3 Cup Championship and came second in the Hi-Tec Batteries Supersport 300 ‘Over’ Class in the Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli (ASBK).
The WorldSSP300 Championship includes 8 rounds held on the same weekend as both the World Superbike (WSBK) and Supersport events. Starting with round 1 in Aragon, Spain, Tom will travel with his team from the Netherlands to each and every round, racing with several of the best young riders in the world.
Team Benjan – Kawasaki is based in the Netherlands and has a strong track record in delivering competitive racing motorcycles, having also provided rides to several Australian riders over the years. Tom will ride the new Kawasaki Ninja 400 in all WSBK events, gaining valuable racing experience along the way. He will also base himself in the Netherlands while competing and traveling to all the races.
In consideration of this phenomenal opportunity, Edwards would like to acknowledge and thank all those who have supported his career past and present.
Tommy Edwards saying, “I’m really excited about racing for Benjan Kawasaki against the best in the WorldSSP300 Championship next year. I enjoyed the ride in the final round in Jerez last month and it was awesome when the official confirmation for the 2018 season came through yesterday. Racing in Europe for a World Championship has always been a dream and I’m very lucky to get the chance so soon! I want to thank all my sponsors and those who have helped me in the past few years, especially Graeme Boyd. I can’t wait to get over there and start racing.”
Benjan Team manager Rob Vennegoor added, “We are delighted to work with Kawasaki for the third year in a row. With the Ninja 400 and our new riders, we hope we can score some good results in the WorldSSP300 Championship. Tom is a motivated and very talented young rider with a lot of experience, despite his young age. We are very confident we’ll have a good year ahead.”
