The 2019 Fly Racing Evolution DST Racewear is high quality off road gear that has evolved from one of the most experienced brands in the business...
You couldn’t ask for a better first set of off-road gear than the Fly Racing Evolution DST kit and gloves, offering a high quality, well designed and ergonomic jersey and pant, with room for armour or knee guards or braces, as well as all day comfort.
There’s a huge variety of colour options available too, to meet almost any preference with the Red/Blue/Black tested, and the Navy/Grey/Orange or Hi-Vis/Black/White also available. The Red/Blue/Black we’ve got are certainly my favourite, as they stand out and look great, but aren’t overwhelmingly colourful.
But let’s have a look at each piece of the Evolution DST kit:
The Evolution DST pant features a full floating 900D seat, which is durable and offers good grip on the bike, and is surrounded by mesh to ensure good breathability.
The knees are pre-shaped and as mentioned that includes room for a guard or brace, with most types catered for, and getting the pants on over a guard is easy.
Heat sheilds on the lower leg also ensure you’re not going to be burnt when the going gets hot, which you can bet it will in the heat of summer, while adding a bit more protection between you and the bike in that area.
Even in winter, the Evolution DST are warm enough on a pleasant day with the sun out and the build quality and materials used are great. I ran a set of DRIRIDER RallyCross Pro 3 overpants when the going got really cold over the Evolution DST pant and couldn’t have asked for a better combo.
A zip and ratchet style adjuster at the waist ensures a good fit alongside the BOA system, which is a dial you can turn to fine tune the fit. Obviously you can’t have your pants falling down when you stand up on the bike!
The lower leg cuffs are also ‘relaxed’ to the point of me not even knowing one was there, which is a good thing, with the pants staying in place the entire time, both at the waist and at the calves.
The Fly Racing Evolution DST jersey meanwhile offers a comfortable fit with plenty of room for the Fly Racing Barricade Long Sleeve Suit underneath, and that includes in the arms, with an open ‘zero-cuff’ with Lycra gusset.
The full mesh back ensures good breathability in all conditions, while details like the seamless armpits ensure no uncomfortable high movement areas. The silicone printed tail also helps keep the jersey tucked in.
Fly Racing claim this is slim cut, and being on the thin side, I thought it was roomy without being too large, which seems like the perfect combo for comfort and ensuring good airflow. There’s also Lycra in the neck and shoulder panels, which offers great elasticity, meaning plenty of room for movement, and again comes back to comfort.
Overall the jersey, like the pant is an awesome piece of kit which looks great and does the job, making it easy overlook just how well everything works.
Finally the Fly Racing Evolution Glove matches the DST colour scheme and offers a lightweight glove with a double-layered palm for high levels of abrasion protection. Split knuckles include ventilated gussets, with an incredibly comfortable overall feel and great fit. Glove sizes can vary slightly, but these were perfect out of the box – well bag – and when heading off road I switched out my DRIRIDER Adventure gloves for these, with exceptional feel and breathability.
Protection is a bit more limited than the heavier road gloves I’m used to, but there’s no denying that level of feel and comfort. It’s easy to forget you’re wearing anything really, while still benefiting from full movement and a good level of protection. I did switch back to a heavier glove once I hit the tar, but these are an awesome option on the dirt.
As I said as a new rider venturing in off-road riding the Fly Racing Evolution DST kit is top notch and I’m keen to put them to further testing. There’s very little to say other than that they fit perfectly and are obviously designed for the job, with everything working nicely, with armour well catered for, and no issues getting the gear on and off. Wearing gear all day and being happy at the end is always the aim, alongside the protection and the Evolution DST jersey, pant and glove certainly delivered.
The only question will be how they look in a year, but that’s a long way off as it stands.
The Fly Racing Evolution DST Jersey is available for $69.95 RRP in sizes Small to 2XL, while the Pant is $259.95 RRP in 30-38, with both available in all three colour options in all sizes. The Evolution glove is available for $49.95 RRP in Small through to 2XL sizes, again in all three colour options.
