Toby Price has moved a step closer to becoming the first Australian to win a classification in the Dakar Rally with another solid performance in Stage 10 overnight.

In a day where thunderstorms compounded the searing heat, the New South Welshman rode conservatively throughout the event’s final marathon stage in an attempt to preserve the advantage he held coming in.

The KTM Factory Red Bull Rally Racing team rider’s measured approach was still good enough to see him finish third in the stage behind Slovakian Stefan Svitko and Argentinian Kevin Benavides.

Svitko’s win was his first Dakar stage victory in the motorcycle category, and saw him trim Price’s lead by five minutes and 47 seconds.

Nevertheless, Price still remains well positioned with a lead of 23 minutes and 12 seconds with just three stages remaining.

Stage 11 of the Dakar Rally will see competitors confront a gruelling 712 kilometre trek (including a 431 kilometre special test) between La Rioja and San Juan.
