The Japanese Motorcycle Grand Prix saw the ultimate battle of the champions, but it was Marc Marquez that reigned victorious claiming the 2016 MotoGP World Championship title on Sunday.

Phillip-Island-MotoGP-Round-2016The 23-year-old Spaniard heads into this weekend’s Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2016 with an unbeatable 77-point lead ahead of rivals Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo who both spilled off the track in separate dramatic crashes.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO Andrew Westacott says this year is set to be a thrilling race, attracting a huge increase in fan attendance.

“The tickets sales are booming and we’re looking to host our biggest event since 2012, when Casey Stoner conquered Phillip Island for the last time,” said Westacott.

“The 2016 season has showcased an incredible eight different Grand Prix winners – fans are in for an incredible experience down at one of the fastest, most exhilarating and recognisable circuits on the calendar, the scenic Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit,” Westacott continued.

“This is a bucket list event and fans will certainly be soaking up the action as the world’s best motorsport riders return to Phillip Island for an incredible fight; it’s going to be a spectacular battle!”

With Brad Binder sealing the Moto3 title in Aragon, the Moto2 championship remains undecided ahead of Phillip Island, currently led by reigning Champion Johann Zarco by 21 points.

Ticket sales to the Michelin Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2016 to date are up 14 per cent year-on-year across all sales, which is the best since 2012 at regional Australia’s biggest international event.

This boost in sales contributes generously to the local economy, putting regional Victoria on the world stage and generating significant global exposure for the region.
