In case you were wondering what happened to Spannerman after the great mag Motorcycle Trader closed, he’s been wearing out rubber on 20 of the world’s best motorcycle rides, drinking his way around the world through wars, natural disasters, border closures and pandemics.
Groff has penned his favourite 20 rides in countries including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, India, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand. Part of the Hardie Grant Ultimate series, Groff’s book is called Ultimate Motorcycle Tours, and is on sale from June 5 for $45 RRP in a bookstore near you (if they don’t have it, ask if it can be ordered for you or contact Hardie Grant books here).
Featured rides include Canada’s Icefields parkway, Highway One in California, Death Valley, Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route, Scotland’s North Coast 500, Germany’s Black Forest, Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Kerala State in India, the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam, the South Island in New Zealand and, of course, Australia’s Great Ocean Road.
Hardie Grant say the focus is on made roads, conventional bikes and riders who love riding but aren’t interested in exploring the outer limits of riding skill and endurance. Got a licence and a bike? You can do this. Every ride featured in Ultimate Motorcycle Tours has hire bike options, a list of the best eats and sleeps on the routes and practical information on costs and what you need to know before you go.
Grant has also slipped in five extra rides at the end along with short but motivating interviews with some of the world’s best-known riders including Elspeth Beard (first English woman to ride around the world), Cam Donald (Isle of Man legend) and Lavi and Ollie who are currently attempting a Guinness World Record by being the youngest pair to circumnavigate the world by motorcycle.
Groff will be a familiar name to many of our readers here at BikeReview. He’s a legend of Australian and New Zealand motorcycle journalism through his work with BIKE Australia, Two Wheels, Motorcycle Trader NZ and Motorcycle Trader in Australia and you see him pop up all over the place these days including on InfoMoto.com.au. He’s been the editor of most of those publications as well as having his work published extensively in Australia and overseas.
We will be getting our hands on a copy of Ultimate Motorcycle Tours ASAP to bring you a review…
