The upgraded electronics package adds further off-road credibility. Electronic rider aids include a special gravel traction control mode in addition to three standard settings, and the ability to switch off ABS at the rear. The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System incorporates multiple riding modes, an electronic throttle, bi-directional quick-shifter, a quick-press easy start system and Suzuki’s low rpm assist to maintain engine idle speed for smoother and easier starts.

Engine
The parallel-engine has a 270-degree crankshaft configuration with a patented Suzuki Cross Balancer – two balancers positioned at 90 degrees to the crankshaft – contributing to even smoother operation. The Euro5 engine, which is also used in the all-new GSX-8S naked roadster unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, has maximum output of 62kW@8500rpm and peak torque of 78Nm@6800rpm. Wet weight is just 230kg, including 20 litres of fuel.

The bike has a highly efficient cooling system, two-into-one exhaust system with dual-stage catalytic converter, and clutch assist which helps to reduce fatigue on long rides and contributes to smoother shifting. The air cleaner, positioned under the seat, is a massive six litres and is optimised to maximise torque production at low rpm. The V-STROM 800DE is also the first member of the V-STROM series that comes fitted with a radiator guard.

Chassis
Suspension travel from the fully adjustable Showa suspension is 220mm at the front and rear, which is the same measurement for the ground clearance – another fresh Suzuki adventure benchmark. Made from sturdy steel pipe, the V-STROM 800DE’S steel frame is engineered to provide all the strength needed for negotiating even the toughest terrain, and that also holds for the seat rails which feature a narrow profile that helps riders better control the bike with their legs.

Suzuki chose front brake calipers that best match for the V-STROM 800DE’s fork pitch and wire-spoked tires. These are mated with 310mm outer diameter floating-mount dual discs to provide sure stopping power and controllable braking performance. The rear brake has a 260mm outer diameter disc and uses a single-piston pin-slide caliper.

The front and rear suspension spring rate, valve, and piston settings are custom-tuned to maximise performance and comfort when riding on all surfaces, paved or gravel. The front and rear suspension realise a long 220mm front fork suspension stroke and 220mm of rear wheel travel.

Spring preload is conveniently adjustable by hand on the rear, and dual front disc brakes with 310mm floating-mount discs provide excellent stopping power and feel. There’s a sizeable 20-litre fuel tank, and the wire-spoked wheels – 21in at the front and 17in at the rear – have a corrosion-resistant coating. The V-STROM 800DE is shod with Dunlop Trailmax dual-purpose rubber.

Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.)

The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) features a collection of advanced electronic rider assist systems. The rider can freely choose the settings for each system to best suit their level of skill and experience, and to optimise performance characteristics for the riding conditions and road surface at any given moment.

The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) features a collection of advanced electronic rider assist systems.

These settings in turn help make the V-STROM 800DE more controllable, predictable, and less tiring to operate. With each system designed and thoroughly tested to operate the way the rider expects, S.I.R.S. helps realise a more exciting riding experience that inspires confidence and frees riders to concentrate on enjoying their adventures.

The robust collection of advanced S.I.R.S. electronic systems employed by the V-STROM 800DE include the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), Suzuki Traction Control System (STSC) with G (Gravel) mode, Ride-by-Wire Electronic Throttle System, Bi-directional Quick Shift System, Suzuki Easy Start System, and Low RPM Assist.

Most of the V-STROM 1050DE assists (read our comprehensive tech talk here) systems were carried onto the 800DE. The highlight being the Gravel mode. G (Gravel) mode retards ignition timing to help the rider better negotiate gravel roads by allowing some slip when riding on unpaved surfaces. When selected, G mode activates when a slight degree of spin is detected, taking effect almost as quickly as the traction control system’s Mode 3 setting. However, because G mode’s maximum level of intervention is set to be less than that of Mode 1, spin is suppressed only enough to help prevent excessive wheel spin, so power continues to be delivered to the rear wheel with minimum interruption. As a result, the rider gets the consistent power output they want, the bike remains controllable, and it is less likely to try to push itself upright or lose traction while cornering.

The V-STROM 800DE’s custom 5in colour TFT LCD multi-function instrument panel features a clearly legible display of a rich variety of information. Not only does it keep the rider fully aware of all the bike’s systems and settings, it also supplies critical real-time operating status information.

V-STROM 800 Assist Highlights

  • Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) better supports the rider in matching performance to the conditions of the riding scene, road conditions, or preferred riding style.
  • In addition to its 3 standard mode settings (+ OFF), Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) for the V-STROM 800DE introduces G (Gravel) mode as a fourth setting designed to help riders better negotiate gravel roads and flat trails.
  • Suzuki’s ride-by-wire electronic throttle control system realises throttle action that responds faithfully to the rider’s every intention.
  • Suzuki’s Bi-directional Quick Shift System (with ON/OFF settings) provides quicker, smoother, more assured shifting, without operating the clutch lever while in motion.
  • The ABS system features a choice of two mode settings for differing road conditions, as well as Rear ABS OFF mode, which offers more control over braking on gravel by letting the rider switch off rear ABS.
  • The Suzuki Easy Start System starts the engine with one quick press of the starter button.
  • Suzuki’s Low RPM Assist function helps maintain engine idle speed for smoother and easier starts.

Suzuki has maintained the distinctive V-STROM ‘beak’ on the 800DE, this style has become the staple of the V-STROM line-up.

Suzuki has maintained the distinctive V-STROM ‘beak’ on the 800DE, this style has become the staple of the 2023 V-STROM line-up.

Suzuki has maintained the distinctive V-STROM ‘beak’ on the 800DE, but it’s now positioned higher which they say is to convey the model’s exceptional ability to handle gravel roads and tough trails. The short – but three-way adjustable – windscreen is designed to maximise visibility off-road, as well as protecting the rider from buffeting at higher speeds.

Grab bars and a rear carrier provide passengers with a firm grip, and the latter is also used as a mount for the optional top case – or simply as an avenue to strap on gear. The V-STROM 800DE also has a five- inch colour TFT screen with night and day modes, and there’s a USB port in the meter cluster. The lighting and indicators are all-LED, including the vertically stacked headlights.
