I recently shared a pit garage at SMSP with Rob Dunston, founder of the famed BMW workshop Motohansa that was in Rydalmere, NSW, for decades. We discussed the T-Rex Harris Honda he now owns, and he told me about his neat Tool Bags. I left with one, and I’ve been using it…

When I was a young apprentice mechanic at Len Willing M/C and Parry’s Kawasaki, tools were my life. Those years and into my earlier racing years in the mid 1990s on the Proddies and 600s, I reckon I spent just as much time cleaning and organising my toolbox and tools as I did preparing my bikes! I really love tools to this day and appreciate quality and a good design. One thing I didn’t have in my kit, and just about the only thing missing, is a good tool bag, so now I do.

The Motohansa Triple Black Pro Adventure Tool Kit I got off Rob is a bit of a bitsa as it was his personal bag he was using on the day, thus doesn’t reflect exactly what you get in the kit. However, it has been really handy for when I take my kids dirt bike riding and when I go to track days. It easily fits in a gear bag, has pretty much everything you need to get out of trouble on the day all in one handy package.

I’ve added a 14mm, 19mm and 22mm 3/4 drive socket, replacing a few I don’t need for my Japanese bikes, and a 6mm spanner and a small shifter. I’ve also replaced a couple of larger Torx bits with 5mm, 6mm and 8mm Allen 3/4 bits. Like I said though, this kit was a bitsa. I’m not using the kit for its intended purpose as an Adventure Bag, specific in this instance to EU bikes, but I am still taking full advantage of it. The actual bag is super strong, well designed and rolls tight with a large velcro securing strap.

The ratchet is awesome. Well balanced in the hand, good leverage, solid mechanism and a locking feature that I have not seen before.

There are some great features in the kit. Starting with the spanners they feature a slim shaft, reducing weight and aiding the bag roll’s small pack size I would imagine, yet still shaped in a way that allows strong use without hurting your palms. The fit is tight in the open end, while the profile has minimal play and a good angle too for accessing those tricky bolts and nuts. Great. lightweight spanners.

The open end spanners are a good fit, with generous head length and profile surface area.

The open end spanners are a good fit, with generous head length and profile surface area allowing the jaw to grasp well.

The ratchet has a solid feel yet a comfortable handle, and is fully extendable too, which is trick, while the head is solid but has a slim profile housing the pawl and round gear and the ball lock on the square head is solid and locks and unlocks via a central button thumb push, you can’t pop sockets on and off without pushing the button. This stops you losing sockets in the bush! Scrolling manually with thumb and forefinger is smooth but a bit solid, while there is a nifty pin lock mechanism than turns the ratchet into a solid tool for when you do not want a ratchet action.

The sockets are decent quality and a good fit, while the various hex drive bits are also good quality and range from flat sided, Phillips head, Torx and Allen bits. There are larger Torx bits for 3/4-drive use, and there is an extension bar, vice grips, and a very nifty multi-purpose T-bar/driver handle as well. I highly recommend Motohansa Tool Bags, there are a variety and there should be something for you…
