2026 Indian Chief Vintage Revealed, Celebrating 125 Years
Indian Motorcycle has unveiled the 2026 Indian Chief Vintage, a heritage-inspired cruiser that draws heavily on the iconic 1940s Chief while blending modern performance and technology. The new model arrives as part of Indian Motorcycle’s global 125th anniversary celebrations.
Inspired by one of the most recognisable motorcycles ever produced, the Chief Vintage takes design cues straight from Indian’s post-war era, featuring flowing valanced fenders, wire-spoke wheels and a classic solo saddle. While firmly rooted in tradition, the new Chief Vintage is built on the brand’s modern Chief platform, combining nostalgic styling with contemporary engineering and rider technology.
For Australian riders, the Chief Vintage adds another option to Indian Motorcycle’s growing local cruiser line-up, sitting alongside the existing Chief, Chief Dark Horse and Super Chief models already available through Indian’s nationwide dealer network.
Classic Design, Modern Execution:
Visually, the 2026 Chief Vintage is unmistakably Indian Motorcycle. The deeply valanced front fender, narrow rear subframe and vintage-style handlebars reflect the Springfield-built Chiefs of the 1940s, while the illuminated Indian headdress ornament adds a premium finishing touch. A reworked solo seat has been designed to maintain period-correct aesthetics while offering improved comfort and ergonomic support for longer rides.
The Thunderstroke engine also receives heritage-inspired detailing, with non-machined black cylinders and silver-painted cylinder heads and pushrod tubes, echoing the raw aluminium finishes of original Chief models. These elements aren’t simply cosmetic additions, but a deliberate nod to Indian Motorcycle’s craftsmanship during its golden era.
According to Indian Motorcycle Design Director Ola Stenegärd, the original Chief remains one of the most influential motorcycles in American history, setting benchmarks for both design and performance that still resonate today. That philosophy underpins the Chief Vintage, which aims to honour the past while remaining relevant to modern riders.
Thunderstroke 116 Power:
Powering the Chief Vintage is Indian Motorcycle’s familiar Thunderstroke 116 air-cooled V-twin, producing a claimed 156Nm of torque, delivered low in the rev range for relaxed cruising and effortless overtaking. As with other Chief models, riders can choose between Tour, Standard and Sport ride modes, allowing throttle response to be tailored to riding conditions or personal preference.
For Australian conditions, the torque-rich delivery and relaxed riding position should suit everything from long country highways to urban commuting, particularly for riders seeking classic cruiser styling without sacrificing usability.
Updated RIDE COMMAND Technology:
Despite its vintage looks, the Chief Vintage is equipped with modern rider tech, centred around Indian Motorcycle’s 101mm (4-inch) round touchscreen display powered by the latest RIDE COMMAND system. The updated software delivers faster start-up times and improved responsiveness, with Indian claiming load times are reduced by around 25 per cent.
New for 2026 is App Enhanced Navigation, allowing riders to plan routes on their smartphone using platforms such as Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze and send directions directly to the bike’s display. Turn-by-turn navigation, ride data, Bluetooth connectivity, music controls and phone integration are all accessible via the touchscreen or handlebar controls, depending on rider preference.
As with all connected features, availability may vary depending on market and local regulations.
Accessories and Touring Options:
Indian Motorcycle is also launching a dedicated range of accessories for the Chief Vintage, aimed at improving comfort, practicality and touring capability. Options include highway bars, a quick-release low windscreen, premium handle grips and rider floorboards for added long-distance comfort.
For riders planning longer trips or two-up riding, weather-resistant vinyl saddlebags provide more than 19 litres of storage per side, while a passenger pillion and touring backrest can be added without compromising the bike’s classic silhouette.
