Indian Motorcycles say they redefined what an American V-Twin can be with the introduction of its category-defying FTR platform in 2019. Now, America’s First Motorcycle Company is taking the beloved FTR platform to a whole new level with a host of changes to the 2022 FTR lineup.
The FTR Carbon will top the line-up for 2022. It oozes performance naked and is a far cry from a typical USA V-twin.
Born and evolved as the ultimate intersection of style and performance, the FTR updates include a thoughtfully refined engine, suspension tuned for the street, and 17in tyres and wheels; together delivering more performance that Indian say makes the bike feel more compact and manoeuvrable.

“The FTR is unlike any other motorcycle in its ability to deliver superior performance while making a powerful statement of style and self-expression. The updates we’ve delivered further solidify that promise for even the most discerning riders,” said Mike Dougherty, President of Indian Motorcycles. “Indian has always pushed the bounds of motorcycling, innovated, and continuously improved and I think the new FTR is another great example of that.”
Developed in direct response to rider feedback, Indian Motorcycle’s 2022 FTR line up features enhancements to raise the bar for the riding experience. All 2022 FTR models feature a retuned engine calibration that refines cold start performance, and delivers a more predictable throttle response.
Additionally, cylinder deactivation and refined heat channeling manages engine heat to keep riders more comfortable. The FTR, FTR S, and FTR R Carbon models are outfitted with 17-inch cast aluminium wheels wrapped with Metzeler SporTec street tyres – Indian claim this results in precision handling in corners and nimble handling on the street.
All three trims will come on the Metzeler SporTec tyres and 17in wheels.
Smaller wheels, along with the bike’s front and rear suspension, which offers 120mm of travel, contribute to a lower seat height by 35mm – opening the door for more riders to throw a leg over the FTR. Additionally, the ProTaper handlebars were trimmed by 40mm to support the bike’s nimble handling and give riders more control.
Each FTR model packs a host of standard features that carry over from previous FTR iterations. An inverted front fork tuned for the street, along with radially mounted dual Brembo brakes provide riders with exceptional control and stopping power, while cruise control contributes to a comfortable ride.
New for the 2022 model, the FTR base model comes standard with fully adjustable forks and piggyback shocks. Featuring an analog gauge, the FTR is available in Black Smoke with red accents throughout, including red pinstripes on the wheels, red Indian Motorcycle script branding across the tank, and a red rear shock spring.
The FTR S includes Indian Motorcycle’s 4.3-inch Ride Command touchscreen display, which offers phone integration via Bluetooth or USB and configurable gauges. The FTR S is standard with an upgraded Akrapovic exhaust, three ride modes, wheelie control with rear lift mitigation, stability control, traction control and cornering ABS. Additionally, a fast-charging USB port provides a convenient means to staying charged.
A 4.3 inch TFT dash creates a futuristic appeal to the FTR. The 2022 model is packed with technology.
Two paint options are available: Maroon Metallic and White Smoke.The FTR R Carbon sits at the top as the premier model in the FTR lineup. In addition to the aforementioned features listed with the FTR S, the FTR R Carbon sets itself apart with carbon-fibre tank covers, front fender and headlight nacelle, fully adjustable Öhlins gold front forks and gold piggyback shocks, a black Akrapovic exhaust, premium seat cover, and numbered badging on the console.
For style and protection, new FTR accessories include a host of new carbon-fibre pieces for your chain guard, v-covers, radiator guards, and 17-in front fender, which all compliment current carbon-fibre accessories. Öhlins Inverted Front Forks and Öhlins Rear Shock are also now available for performance accessory options.
To add comfort and miles, Indian also now have a Rear Rack Bag, R Carbon Seat, and a USB Charging Port as accessory add-on options. They offer over 60 premium carry-forward style, performance and functional accessories to show your personal style. With numerous tank cover designs and even unpainted tank covers, you can add a design that is unique as well.
Öhlins created the Inverted Front Forks specifically for the FTR to optimise its ride and handing in all conditions. Indian say the Inverted Forks enhance stability, and the travel of 120mm swallows up more bump impact than the standard forks. The inner tubes of the forks have a stout diameter of 43mm, and the tubes are coated in premium Titanium Nitride for the most consistent and reliable performance.
The R Carbon seat can be added for extra comfort and looks. Ohlins fully adjustable rear shocks.
The forks are pre-load adjustable, and have adjustable compression and rebound damping so a rider can customise the bike’s suspension. These forks cannot be used on models with 19-inch front wheels.
The rear shocks feature adjustable compression and rebound damping so riders can dial in rear suspension performance to suit their preferences. This shock has a piston rod diameter of 16mm, and a 55mm stroke that lets it swallow up bumps and smooth the ride. The shock body features an anodized finish and Öhlins branding.
