The Airoh Commander is a feature packed lightweight adventure touring helmet that is fast becoming a global favourite among adventure riders. Here are some reasons why...

First impressions are everything, a product needs to appeal to a person first, then comes the try on and then eventually the purchase of the product to hopefully a satisfied customer. It doesn’t really matter what the product is, it has to appeal. Here’s my Airoh Commander test.

A helmet needs to fit properly and offer features that will entice the buyer to purchase it. I recently went away for three days covering a new adventure bike launch for BikeReview, where I had the opportunity to test the Airoh Commander adventure touring helmet over the three days.

I like to be understated in what I wear most of the time, so the black finish suited me perfectly but there are much brighter options, something for everyone…

The Airoh Commander does all these things very well. The helmet looks great just sitting there on a shelf or table, the styling is modern and appeals to the eye. I like to be understated in what I wear most of the time, so the black finish suited me perfectly but there are much brighter options, something for everyone. Once I started to look at the features of the Commander I was getting more excited and impressed with what it had to offer.

A peak for the off-road riding that was also removable for road riding. A full visor that seals the elements out and offers very good wide and clear vision with exceptional peripheral vision as well, the visor can also be removed if you want to run goggles when off road. There is also a simple to use sun visor that is easy to engage or retract and it offers very good sun protection to the eyes, far better than trying to jam a pair of sunglasses on.

The Commander also comes with three zone ventilation and Bluetooth ready outer shells in two sizes. You can of course get a range of graphics with the Commander that are stylish and unique in their design. The Commander also has a removable inner liner that can be washed. The chin strap is the normal double D arrangement and easy to use. You also get in the box a Stop wind, Pinlock, Action Cam naked version, Action Cam Enduro version, Taps for naked version and Go Pro support.

Wearing the helmet from new for the three days was not a problem, it fitted me well from the start and at no time did I feel I needed a period of bedding in to get it comfortable for me. Day one was mainly highway and bitumen back roads from Melbourne to Mt Buller. The Commander set up in its off road guise was not a problem at speed, I thought the peak might pull the helmet around at higher speeds but it didn’t cause any sort of issues at all. The visor was excellent in both keeping the wind out and was also quiet with no rattles or vibration, drop down the sun visor for the reduced glare and it was a very quiet, stable and easy to wear helmet on the road.

Day two was all dirt roads and trails around Mt Buller. We had an early start so once into the trails there was a low rising sun that at times was right in the line of sight, the sun visor did a very good job of reducing the glare. With 15 bikes in the group there was plenty of dust kicked up by the other riders, you will always get a portion of dust coming into the helmet and getting on both sides of the visor. It was easy enough to clean at the different stops on the ride, a bit of bottled water splashed around and it was clear and ready for the next stint.

The light weight of the helmet at 1370g using carbon-fibre, made it a very pleasant experience, the fatigue factor to your neck was negligible. In conclusion, This Airoh Commander helmet would be at the top of my list for a completely versatile and extremely well made helmet for road and adventure use, a great product. There’s so much safety included in this lid which you should check out in the key points below, but the Airoh Commander is a seriously good adventure helmet.
