Paul Bailey puts the MotoDry Rallye 2 adventure jacket and pants, plus the MotoDry Trekkker adventure boots to the ultimate three day torture test... Here is his review.

I took part in a three day adventure test recently, so the opportunity was there to test my MotoDry Rallye 2 Jacket & Pants. The weather for the three days? Typical Alpine conditions with cold nights and mornings warming to low twenties for the daytime temperature.

I wanted something that was versatile enough to keep me warm and protected but also easy to strip down when the temperatures got warmer. Also it was important that it was going to offer some good protection in key areas of the body in case of an off while negotiating the rocky terrain on the snowy mountains and surrounding areas.

MotoDry Rallye 2 Jacket $319.95 RRP

I decided on the Rallye 2 Jacket because of its versatility and robustness. There are two removable liners, one is for water prevention, the other is for warmth, both use a zipper and button retainers to hold them in place inside the jacket and both are removable within a couple of minutes.

The Jacket is made of 600 Denier H/D abrasion material with reinforced shoulders and elbows. There is also a removable back protector and also safety CE shoulder and elbow protection. There are air vents all over this jacket that have both zip and clip openings that let the cool air in easily. There is also a soft feel collar, adjustable waist belt, zippered front pockets with Velcro storm flaps, two large front lower weather resistant pockets, a pant to jacket zip for the matching pants and built in reflectors, there are also adjustable wrist straps.

Now that’s a lot of stuff for this jacket and for the ride I was doing I wasn’t going to use a lot of it, but it is great to know the jacket has that versatility to be used in all conditions with confidence and security. First day of the ride was a road ride from Melbourne to Mt Buller, nothing really special, but the jacket was comfortable to wear and with the liners in place offered a nice warm experience with the cold weather we were riding along in.

Hitting the tarmac twisties wearing the MotoDry Rallye 2 jacket and pants.

Day two was a bit different with an early start in the much colder Mt Buller area. The liners were very handy and kept me warm. Once the riding got more adventurous with a lot of difficult trails both 4WD and single tracks the jacket offered confidence knowing that there was good protection if a minor off did occur. The day got warmer, so at the first stop I took the opportunity to remove the rain liner and leave the quilted liner in place. This helped a lot with body temp as the rain liner was trapping all my body heat in the jacket. I kept the quilted liner in for the rest of the day and it was a very pleasant ride with in the cold conditions we were experiencing.

I must admit I had one strategic step off from the bike on a very steep, very loose rocky climb that caught the bike out. No choice but to step off the bike, I lost my footing and had a tumble down the hill for a few metres. The protection in the jacket did a great job of absorbing the impacts as I clumsily fell down, not my most dignified dismount. The jacket material also held up very well with no visible damage at all. Day three was road riding around the Mt Buller roads and another early start, again I appreciated the built in warmth of the Rallye 2 jacket.vOver the three days, I found the Rallye 2 jacket to be very practical and very versatile. It was comfortable in all the environments it was tested and stood up extremely well to the work. A very nice Jacket at an affordable price.

MotoDry Rallye 2 pants $219.95 RRP

I chose the MotoDry Rallye 2 pants to go with my Rallye 2 jacket. I chose these because they offered the versatility of wet weather and cold conditions, but could also be stripped down for warmer weather. Over the three days we experienced all three conditions. A quite warm ride out of Melbourne to Mt Buller via scenic back roads where it was best with the waterproof lining and the quilted lining removed to allow the pants to breath. A full day on trails and 4WD tracks of the Snowy area and another half day riding the bitumen roads around Mt Buller.

The second days ride started early and temps were only around 6ºC. I set the pants up with both the waterproof lining and the quilted lining, knowing that it wouldn’t take much to remove these if the day warmed up. Well, the day only warmed up slightly but 60km of hard 4WD and goat tracks soon had all of us working up a sweat and getting the heart rate up. First stop I stripped out the water proof lining which cooled things off nicely for the next stint of the off road riding. I stayed with the quilted liner with the high altitude cold air for the rest of the day, once we got to lower altitudes and warmer temps the quilted liner could have come out, but there was only a short ride back to the resort so I left it in.

“I use knee braces when doing off road work, it helps with stability, I had no problem wearing these and being able to get the pants on properly”.

They are good for all year conditions I believe and are very versatile in what they have. The material is 600 Denier H/D abrasion resistant, with reinforced seat and knee areas. There is removable knee and hip protection, the knees are pre curved for better fit and there is a stretched ribbed panel above the knees and the back of the waist. There is also a stretched breathable crotch panel to help with comfort. The waist band is multi adjustable and uses Velcro for the adjustment and is easy to use. The legs have a long leg zip panel to loosen the cuffs so as to fit off road boots inside the pants, my boots had no problem fitting in and the zips did up easily. There also plenty of ventilation pockets that unzip and fold back to add to air supply.

“I went for the Black Sand Brown colour scheme, it got dirty over the three days but cleaned up very well after the event”…

I use knee braces when doing off road work, it helps with stability, I had no problem wearing these and being able to get the pants on properly and there was ample room for my knees to mover inside the pants. Often pants are too tight to fit these sorts of braces inside, I even left the knee pads in place. The MotoDry Rallye 2 pants are now a favourite of mine as is the matching jacket. I went for the Black Sand Brown colour scheme, it got dirty over the three days but cleaned up very well after the event. There are sizes from small to 5XL plus stout and stout plus. The whole outfit is tough, versatile and very affordable and I’m sure with last for many years.

MotoDry Trekker Waterproof Adventure Boots $249.95 RRP

I definitely needed some boots as my old ones were way past their used by date and were starting to fall apart. I decided to go for a good all round boot that was capable for serious off road riding but also gave some comfort and practicality in normal riding and light off road work. The boot I decided on was the MotoDry Adventure Trekker Black/Brown, these are a beautiful boot to look at with the contrasting colours of leather and black protective areas on the boot. The sole is rugged with a good tread for grip in the worst conditions with a small heel to help locate the foot on the ‘pegs.

“To my surprise, these were soft, compliant, supple and extremely comfortable from the first fit and use”…

I got the boots a couple of weeks before the event and planned to do some walking and riding with them to help bed them in, nothing worse than new boots that give you hell the first time you need to use them seriously. But, to my surprise, these were soft, compliant, supple and extremely comfortable from the first fit and use. There was no need to break them in, they were like a soft glove on my feet from the start and never gave me any hint of trouble during the three day first ride. Riding, walking or checking out some of the steep terrain, the boots were fantastic!

Plenty of times I had a foot down dragging in the dirt or hitting rocks and tree branches on the ground, I never felt like I was going to get hurt… Not once did I feel like I had made the wrong choice or had any discomfort from these boots.

These are full grain genuine leather uppers that fell thick and luxurious, with an “Aerodry” breathable waterproof membrane inside, there is a hard PU shin plate, protector pads on each boot for gear shifts whether left or right, internal cup ankle protectors, three adjustable straps plus Velcro closure, a very comfortable inner sole, a soft feel top curtain surround and good non slip sole. There are even spare straps in the box for the future if needed.

The boots copped plenty of work over the three day event from hours standing on the bear trap ‘pegs to water crossings to caked on mud.

The boots copped plenty of work over the three day event from hours standing on the bear trap ‘pegs to water crossings to caked on mud. Plenty of times I had a foot down dragging in the dirt or hitting rocks and tree branches on the ground, I never felt like I was going to get hurt or compromised, the boots offered the protection I needed and wanted. Not once did I feel like I had made the wrong choice or had any discomfort from these boots.

After the event was all over, I washed them up with some soapy water, let the leather dry and gave them a quick leather treatment for protection and they looked as good as new, they definitely had no signs of fatigue or deterioration. The MotoDry Adventure Trekker boots are a very affordable, very tough and extremely stylish adventure boot that is totally capable in both off road and on road riding situations. A very nice adventure boot.
