As with everything else about motorcycles, there are different opinions about footpegs. But when it comes to stand-up adventure riding and off-road support, width and grip rule...
Do you fit rubber inserts when riding on road, and remove them for the dirt? Well, that may not be absolutely necessary. The Oryx Moto footpegs I have been using on my BMW F 750 GS suggest to me that it is not. I also use the Sidestand Plate and Brake Extension.
Oryx Moto Footpegs
Named after an antelope with amazingly long horns, these are quite wide so that my boots sit on them happily. That, combined with the secure grip the teeth on top of the ‘pegs provide, seems to offer the same comfort as a rubber-covered footpeg with more security. That is especially true when I stand up.
Oryx products were new to me when I unwrapped the footpegs along with a couple of other stainless-steel accessories. Luke Krajkarski from ADV Motorcycle Parts had asked me to take a look at these South African products and comment on them because he thought that the brand deserved more exposure. I’m the right bloke for this; I have a high opinion of South African stuff. Like Kiwis, Umlungu tend to take a lot of care with the things they design and make. They also use good materials; all Oryx manufactured component are grade 304 stainless steel, while nuts and bolts are stainless 316.
Oryx Sidestand Plate and Brake Extension
The footpegs, sidestand extension and brake lever extension that Luke sent me all look impressively solid and strong. The teeth on the ‘pegs and the brake lever extension are prominent but not aggressive and do their work well without being likely to rip anything or score your boot soles. Fitting everything was easy; all you need to bring to the party is an Allen key and a bit of Loctite. The stainless steel looks good and I expect it to stay that way. All in all, top gear.
A clever idea on the ADV Motorcycle Parts website is that prices seem to be quoted automatically in your own currency; the footpegs are listed at A$154 the pair, while both the brake lever and sidestand extensions cost A$61 each. Although the gear is made in South Africa, international and US shipping is from Valencia, CA while Canadian orders ship from Summerland, BC.
Any questions about these Moto products, contact info@advmotorcycleparts.com. The company also offers Turkana and Rhino Case products as well as a lot of other Oryx gear including pannier racks. Oh, and they also run organised motorcycle tours in southern Africa. Now that sounds tempting… The footpegs and extensions are staying on my BMW. I expect the footpegs, especially, to make my next long trip more comfortable and fuss-free.
