The new V-STROM 800 is a road oriented version of the V-STROM 800DE. It arrives here in January with a ride away price of $17,490. Find out all of the details on the bike here...

With the introduction of the MY24 V-STROM 800, Suzuki is expanding the V-STROM series to now offer adventure loving riders another new option from which to choose, a more road oriented version. This follows the launch of the V-STROM 800DE.

The V-STROM 800 features cast alloy 7-spoke 19in front and 17in rear wheels with road tyres.

The V-STROM 800 represents a new entry into the mid-size adventure category. While the V-STROM 800DE (Dual Explorer) was specialised to excel at riding on gravel and other loose road surfaces, the V-STROM 800 evolves the chassis in the direction of providing maximum comfort and performance for long-distance touring and high-speed riding. Let’s look at some of the details released.

There are a number of changes to the 800 that should make it a fantastic street ride, while still maintaining ‘soft’ roading.

To make the V-STROM more of a road tourer than the DE version, Suzuki have made some changes in critical areas. The screen is taller, for freeway wind protection, the beak is redesigned, it has upgraded radial-mount calipers over the DE axial mounted ones, cast alloy 19in and 17in wheels with Dunlop D614 tyres, front suspension travel reduced from 220mm to 150mm and forks are re-worked for road use, the shock is swapped to a street oriented version and rear travel dropped from 220mm to 185mm.

Reduced suspension travel, upgraded wheels and brakes and road oriented tyres.

Reduced suspension travel, upgraded wheels and brakes and road oriented tyres are just some of the changes.

Importantly, the seat height has been reduced over the tall DE version, with the V-STROM 800 seat height being standard at 825mm versus the DE’s 855mm height. Also, the handlebars are narrower, tapered and have a more forward positioning. Also, for improved comfort, the footpegs are rubber mounted on the V-STROM 800, while on the DE they are wider steel items with a removable rubber.

Some items removed from the V-STROM 800 that come with the DE include the radiator guard, three piece off-road front guard (replaced with a more road styled version), and the suspension is less adjustable, with the shock having preload and rebound, and the forks having preload only. But the price is around a grand less and the upgraded calipers make up for the suspension changes in our opinion. The suspension is quality, the forks are SHOWA SFF-BP and the shock SHOWA with remote preload.

The V-STROM 800 looks on paper to be a great all-rounder and should be a nice road tourer here in OZ. We can't wait to find out when we ride one...

The geometry of the V-STROM 800 is more road focussed, the trail up from 114 to 124mm and rake reduced from 28º to a sharper 26º angle. Wet weight of the bike comes in at 223kg, around 7kg less than the DE version. The ‘pegs are positioned 7mm higher and 14mm further back.

Overall width is a whopping 70mm less at 905mm, height is 1355mm, 55mm lower than the DE and length is 2255mm, which is 90mm shorter than the 800 DE. Fuel capacity remains the same at 20L and there is no info released yet on final gearing.

There are a wide range of accessories for the V-STROM 800 including luggage, three seat heights, a DC outlet, tank pad, heated grips, navigation bracket, stand plate, mirror extensions, fuel cap stickers, hand guards and more. All of these are available to browse on the Suzuki V-STROM 800 page here.

2024 Suzuki V-STROM 800 Tech Talk

Engine
The parallel-engine has a 270-degree crankshaft configuration with a patented Suzuki Cross Balancer – two balancers positioned at 90 degrees to the crankshaft – contributing to even smoother operation. The Euro5 engine, which is also used in the all-new GSX-8S, has maximum output of 62kW@8500rpm and peak torque of 78Nm@6800rpm.

V-STROM 800 Engine Highlights:

  • 776cc parallel twin DOHC engine delivers a fine balance of smooth, controllable power from low rpm and the pleasant feeling of free-revving performance through to the high end.
  • The 270-degree crankshaft configuration helps maintain a pleasant feeling in common with the model’s V-twin brethren.
  • Suzuki Cross Balancer, the first of its type on a production motorcycle, contributes to smooth operation and a compact, lightweight engine design.
  • Cooling system inlet control helps maintain consistent engine temperature and eliminate rough idle while warming the engine in cold weather.

  • The electronic throttle-bodies help achieve faithful response and a linear feeling to throttle action.
  • The 2-into-1 exhaust system features a dual-stage catalytic converter inside the collector that helps satisfy Euro 5 emissions standards, and a long, upswept muffler.

  • The six-speed transmission realises smooth shifting and improved controllability.
  • Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) helps reduce fatigue on long rides and contributes to smoother shifting.

Chassis
Suspension travel from the semi adjustable SHOWA suspension is 150mm at the front and 185mm rear. Made from sturdy steel pipe, the V-STROM 800 steel frame is engineered to provide all the strength needed for negotiating even the toughest terrain, and that also holds for the seat rails which feature a narrow profile that helps riders better control the bike with their legs.

Chassis Key Features

  • A rugged new steel frame developed for the V-STROM 800 contributes to comfort, straight-line stability, and nimble handling.
  • The seat rails are engineered to withstand the rigours of riding on unpaved surfaces, even with the optional top and side cases mounted, and also feature a narrow profile.

  • Semi adjustable Hitachi Astemo (SHOWA) inverted front forks featuring a 150mm stroke deliver a smooth, controllable ride.
  • Adjustable Hitachi Astemo (SHOWA) rear suspension with link, with its 185mm of travel contributes to agility and stability. The spring preload can be adjusted easily by hand, which is beneficial when preparing to ride tandem or carry a load.
  • Dual front disc brakes with 310mm floating-mount discs provide sure stopping power and controllability.
  • 19in and 17in 7-spoke alloy wheels.
  • Dunlop D614 110/80 – 19 and 150/70 – 17 tyres.
  • Adopts a uniquely shaped lightweight aluminium swingarm with enhanced torsional rigidity to support the increased suspension travel and contribute to straight-line stability.
  • The fuel tank features a large 20L capacity that helps deliver superior touring range.
  • Narrower handlebars for street/touring comfort.

  • The riding position is designed for comfort and to offer the rider plenty of room, even when riding tandem with the optional top and side cases mounted.
  • Rubber covered comfort footpegs for road use.
  • The tall windscreen to protect the rider from buffeting when touring at higher speeds.
  • Rear carrier makes it easier to load gear or mount the optional top case.

Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.)
The Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) features a collection of advanced electronic rider assist systems. The rider can freely choose the settings for each system to best suit their level of skill and experience, and to optimise performance characteristics for the riding conditions and road surface at any given moment.

  • In addition to its 3 standard mode settings (+ OFF), Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS).
  • Suzuki’s ride-by-wire electronic throttle control system realises throttle action that responds faithfully to the rider’s every intention.

  • Suzuki’s Bi-directional Quick Shift System (with ON/OFF settings) provides quicker, smoother, more assured shifting, without operating the clutch lever while in motion.
  • The ABS system features a choice of two mode settings for differing road conditions.
  • The Suzuki Easy Start System starts the engine with one quick press of the starter button.
  • Suzuki’s Low RPM Assist function helps maintain engine idle speed for smoother and easier starts.
